The Latest: Death penalty phase begins for convicted killer

CLEVELAND - The Latest on arguments to jurors on whether a man convicted of murdering three women whose bodies were found wrapped in garbage bags should receive the death penalty. (all times local):

11:55 a.m.

Jurors have begun hearing arguments on whether a man convicted of murdering three women in the Cleveland area whose bodies were found wrapped in garbage bags should receive the death penalty.

The sentencing phase of Michael Madison's trial began Thursday in a Cleveland courtroom. He was convicted last week of aggravated murder and kidnapping.

Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Madison deserves to die for killing the three women, whose bodies were found in July 2013 near the East Cleveland apartment building where he lived.

Madison's attorneys have said his troubled background includes reports of childhood beatings and malnourishment and his life should be spared.

Authorities say Madison confessed to killing two of the women.

The same jury that convicted Madison will decide his fate, with the judge having the final say.
