Men charged after shooting of Atlanta police officer

ATLANTA - Police say two men have been charged after a police officer was shot near an apartment complex in Atlanta.

Local news media report Sunday that Michael Thomas and Antonio Bell are charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, home invasion, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and criminal damage to property.

Police Sgt. Warren Pickard says Bell walked out of Allure at Brookwood apartment complex, about five miles north of downtown Atlanta, as the officer walked toward the door. Pickard says Thomas shot the officer in the abdomen.

Pickard says both suspects fled.

Pickard says the officer returned fire and hit Thomas in the side stomach area. The officer was wearing a vest.

Bell is being held at the Fulton County Jail. Thomas will head to jail after being discharged from the hospital.

The name of the officer has not been released.
