The lawyer for a man charged with fatally shooting a police officer in Indianapolis says the facts of the case don't merit him facing the death penalty.
Defence attorney Denise Turner says in a statement that she's disappointed with the Marion County prosecutor's decision announced Thursday to seek capital punishment for Jason D. Brown.
Authorities say Brown shot Southport police Lt. Aaron Allan 11 times after the officer tried to help him following a car crash along an Indianapolis street on July 27.
Turner says she believes the facts in the case will make it apparent that Brown shouldn't face a death sentence, but didn't elaborate.

Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for the man charged with fatally shooting a police officer who was trying to help him following a car crash in Indianapolis.
The decision announced Thursday by Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry comes about two months after authorities say Jason D. Brown shot Southport police Lt. Aaron Allan. Court documents say Brown was dangling upside down in his overturned car when Allan approached.
Brown is charged with opening fire on Allan, who suffered 11 gunshot wounds and died a short time later.
Curry said last month that he was weighing whether to pursue capital punishment or life in prison without parole against Brown.
A judge has entered a not guilty plea for Brown, who is charged with murder in the July 27 shooting.
