Tory Burch inspired by artsy college for new collection

Original Publication Date February 10, 2019 - 8:56 PM

NEW YORK - Tory Burch was inspired by higher learning for her fall collection at New York Fashion Week. Specifically, she looked to Black Mountain College, a progressive school in North Carolina.

"I'm amazed by how many people don't know about it," Burch said backstage. "It was founded in 1933, rural North Carolina and it's really where modern art started in America. Not started but really informed the trajectory of modern art."

The collection shown Sunday featured an array of Burch's standard feminine dresses with sharp patterns and glitzy embellishments, but also straight-cut coats, shearling jackets layered over ruffled blouses and bold metallic accessories.

She tailored trousers in herringbone and rolled out neutral sweaters, all with a back-to-school feel.

The stars came out to see what Burch had to offer, including Zoe Saldana, Naomi Watts, Isabelle Huppert and Mindy Kaling.

"I'm always looking forward to shopping. One hundred per cent of the time," Kaling joked.

Budding star Lana Condor of Netflix's "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" also attended during her very first fashion week.

"This was on my bucket list — here, being here with Tory Burch is amazing. What else is on my bucket list? Go to Italy. Do an animation. Definitely. And I don't know. Jump out of a plane."
