The Latest: 2 arrested in robbery of California news crew

OAKLAND, Calif. - The Latest on a news crew robbed at gunpoint in California (all times local):

11:55 a.m.

Police in Northern California say they have arrested two people in the armed robbery of a news crew and the shooting of their security guard.

The Oakland Police Department said Monday the equipment belonging to CBS affiliate KPIX was recovered.

Police say the guard was treated and released at a hospital for a gunshot wound.

KPIX says a reporter and a photographer were gathering interviews Sunday at the Oakland Library when a car pulled up and two suspects got out and one of them pointed a gun at them and demanded their camera.

The station says the suspect shot the guard who returned fire, wounding one of the suspects.

Police say they arrested one of the robbers after he crashed the car during a police pursuit.

The other suspect was detained after he walked into a hospital seeking treatment of several gunshot wounds.


3:30 a.m.

A news station says a security guard for a filming crew that was robbed while covering the Oakland teachers strike is stable in a hospital after being shot.

CBS affiliate KPIX said authorities arrested a man suspected of shooting the guard in the confrontation that took place before 5 p.m. Sunday.

KPIX says a reporter and a photographer were gathering interviews at the Oakland Library when a driver pulled a gun, demanding their camera. The crew surrendered the equipment and began walking away.

The station says the suspect shot the guard, Matt Meredith, in the leg.

An Alameda County sheriff's spokesman says a 21-year-old man with gunshot wounds walked into a hospital afteward. Oakland police arrested the man on suspicion of shooting the guard.
