The Latest: Boy says bullies attacked him, sister when alone

April 11, 2018 - 2:01 PM

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Latest on a 6-year-old girl's death and the charges against her parents (all times local):

5 p.m.

Authorities say a 9-year-boy found injured at his Massachusetts home told police bullies attacked him and his 6-year-old sister when their parents left them unattended.

Police said Wednesday the girl had "extensive bruising" and the boy had bruising and a neck wound. Police found the girl dead Tuesday after responding to a 911 call to the Fitchburg home.

Parents Shana Pedroso and Marvin Brito were arrested.

The couple was charged with reckless endangerment. Pedroso was also charged with assault and battery. Both have pleaded not guilty. Attorneys for either have not been reached for comment.

The boy told police he had gotten his injuries Monday when bullies attacked him and his sister when they were left alone during a walk outside. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

3:10 p.m.

Police say the mother of a 6-year-old Massachusetts girl found dead told her 9-year-old son not to call 911 and used super glue to close a wound on his neck.

Thirty-seven-year-old Shana Pedroso and 38-year-old Marvin Brito were charged with reckless endangerment of a child at Fitchburg District Court on Wednesday. Pedroso was also charged with assault and battery, while Brito was charged with permitting substantial injury to a child.

Both have pleaded not guilty.

Police responded to a call at the Fitchburg home Tuesday and found the boy injured and the girl unresponsive. The girl was pronounced dead at a hospital. The boy's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Pedroso and Brito, the children's father, are being held without bail. A hearing is scheduled for April 18.

9:10 a.m.

Prosecutors say two people are facing charges in the death of a 6-year-old Massachusetts girl.

The Worcester district attorney's office in a statement Wednesday announced the arrests of a man and a woman, but did not provide names, the charges they face or their relationship to the child. They face arraignment Wednesday.

District Attorney Joseph Early told reporters that police responding to a 911 call at a Fitchburg home Tuesday found an injured 9-year-old boy and a non-responsive 6-year-old girl.

Early says the children were taken to the hospital, where the girl was pronounced dead. The district attorney says the boy's injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

Fitchburg Police Chief Earnest Martineau says it was not a "random act" and there is no danger to the public.

This story has been corrected to show that arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday, not Tuesday.
