Police: Suspect didn't act in self-defence in fatal shootout

BATON ROUGE, La. - Baton Rouge Police say a man suspected in a shootout that left two Southern University students dead wasn't acting in self-defence when he fired on a fleeing gunman.

According to an arrest affidavit, 25-year-old Brandon Henderson fired the first shots in the air outside an apartment complex early April 10. In response, 22-year-old Ernest Bernard Felton did not flee to safety. Instead, police say he fired a Glock 9 mm handgun as he walked toward the car Henderson was driving and continued to pump bullets in his direction.

Those bullets struck 19-year-old students, Lashuntae Benton and Annette January.

Felton was arrested Friday on two counts of second-degree murder and a count of illegal use of a weapon. He earlier faced an attempted murder count, accused of shooting Henderson.
