Kentucky man charged with stabbing father at church

August 14, 2016 - 1:54 PM

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - A Kentucky man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly stabbed his father as they attended a church service.

In a news release, Bowling Green police said Ethan A. Buckley, 21, of Bowling Green, was charged with assault following the stabbing during a service at Hillvue Heights Baptist Church.

Police said Buckley's father was taken to Bowling Green Medical Center, where his condition wasn't immediately known. The father's name wasn't released.

Buckley was lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail.

Police say no other injuries were reported and additional details on the stabbing were unavailable. Local media outlets reports the assailant was subdued by congregation members and security workers.

Witness Ashlyn Rice was standing at the back of the crowded church during the 9:30 a.m. service when she heard a commotion occurring toward the front. She said it happened near the end of the service while a guest pastor was speaking.

Rice told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that she heard another man speak loudly, then saw people run for the door and she followed them. She didn't see the assault.

"I'm still really shaken up," she said. "Church is the one place you think that you'd be safe. Now I don't even know what to think."

Rice, a Bowling Green resident who will be a freshman at nearby Western Kentucky University this fall, said she isn't sure whether she'll return to the church for services soon.

"It might take a while for me to feel comfortable going back, especially that church," she said. "Eventually, yes."

The church's 11 a.m. service was cancelled. A message left with the church wasn't immediately returned.

Bowling Green is about 70 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee.
