2 Chicago officers charged with stealing drugs, cash

CHICAGO - A federal court has charged two Chicago police offices with lying to judges to obtain search warrants then stealing cash and drugs from properties they searched.

In a news release, the U.S. Attorney's Office says Xavier Elizondo and David Salgado are charged with embezzlement and conspiracy to commit theft after allegedly stealing property and falsifying police reports to conceal their thefts while working as gang officers.

Prosecutors allege the officers had two people pose as confidential informants and provide false information they used to secure search warrants. They're also accused of stealing $4,200 from a vehicle they searched in January.

A department spokesman says the 45-year-old Elizondo and the 37-year-old Salgado have been relieved of their police powers and suspended without pay.
