Alberta man who rescued dog from western NY pond last week dies

BATH, N.Y. - An Alberta man who was pulled out of a western New York pond while rescuing a dog has died after being hospitalized.

Authorities say 55-year-old Earl Gallant died last Saturday morning at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa.

Troopers say Gallant was hospitalized after he was pulled out of a pond last Wednesday at Campers Haven campground in the Steuben (stoo-BEHN') County town of Bath, 100 kilometres south of Rochester.

Police say after he helped rescue the dog from the pond, Gallant went under the water.

They say he was found about 15 metres from shore in 3.6 metres of water after being submerged for 13 minutes.
