UPDATE: Crews may conduct controlled burns on East Shuswap Road Fire

This photo shows smoke from the East Shuswap Road fire on July 13, 2018 from Waddington Drive, facing east.

KAMLOOPS - You might see some more smoke and flames near the East Shuswap Road wildfire site today if conditions are right for controlled burn operations.

Fire information officer Jody Lucius from B.C, Wildfire says fire activity has lessened from what we saw yesterday during the wind event.

She says there are 89 ground crew members onsite, four pieces of heavy equipment, four helicopters and an incident management team.

Later today, July 14, crews will test whether they can do small burn operations this afternoon. If those tests go well, then they may go ahead with burn operations.

According to the wildfire service's website, crews are extinguishing hot spots around the fire and continuing to establish control lines and hose lay. The north side of the fire is fully machine-guarded.

The latest size estimate puts the fire at roughly 500 hectares, staying steady from numbers yesterday afternoon. Strong winds gave firefighters a battle yesterday evening, causing the fire to escape the south, which forced the evacuations of some homes in the area.

By dark, firefighters were able to control the escape and residents were allowed home.
