A West Kelowna-based lumber mill is giving 1,000 of its employees a $5,000 bonus to help them deal with rising costs due to inflation.

Gorman Group CEO Nick Arkle said the company recognizes its workers have faced several challenges over the past two years including the COVID-19 pandemic, weather events and the general state of the economy.

“They face the increasing pressures of inflation and uncertainty, and we are fortunate to be able to lessen the impact of those rising costs for them and their families,” Arkle said in a media release.

“We recognize our employees have come through two years of challenges from the pandemic to various weather events and the general economy.”

Lumber prices and markets are softening but the company is benefiting from the previous two years of very high prices for its products.

“We recognize our employees are having to deal with the rising cost of gas, food, and consumer goods,” Arkle said. “We hope this will help all of them.”

Active hourly workers who have been with Gorman Group for at least six months will be getting the $5,000 bonus. Other workers will get a pro-rated amount.

“We know Canadians are feeling the effects of inflation, and we believe our 1,000 employees make us who we are, and we take care of each other,” he said.

Gorman Group produces wood products for the home renovation market with operations in West Kelowna, Lumby, Revelstoke and Oroville, Washington. It’s been in operation for more than 70 years in B.C.
