New Brunswick university cuts men's hockey program as too expensive

FREDERICTON - The men's varsity hockey program at St. Thomas University in Fredericton has been cut as the school grapples with a budget deficit.

University president and vice-chancellor Dawn Russell says the cost of running the hockey program at the small university has been found to be unsustainable, as the school works to address its financial priorities.

She says the program's elimination will save the school $245,000 a year in operating costs, athletic financial awards, and staffing.

Russell says the university will remain focused on its core academic mission and will continue to fund other athletics programs.

She says the timing of the announcement will allow current and prospective student athletes to make decisions for the coming hockey season.
