Freighter canoe carrying six children missing in northern Quebec

HALIFAX - A large freighter canoe carrying two adults and six children has been reported missing in northern Quebec.

The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax says the seven-metre canoe was headed across a section of Ungava Bay and was expected to arrive at its destination on Sunday or Monday.

But the group has yet to show up.

Lt. Edward Stansfield, a spokesman for Maritime Forces Atlantic, says the group is from the area and regularly plies the waters of the big bay.

Stansfield says the area has been beset by strong winds, fog and rain, and searchers are hoping the group went ashore to wait for the weather to clear.

Still, a volunteer searcher is expected to scan the area in a Twin Otter aircraft until nightfall, and the military has dispatched a Hercules aircraft as well.
