DUNCAN - There’s a reason why the Cowichan Valley Capitals’ Kyle Horsman wears the ‘C.’ The Capitals Captain scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the third period, as the Capitals upset the Penticton Vees 4-2 Sunday afternoon in Duncan.
With the loss at the Island Savings Centre, the Vees take home three out of a possible six points on their three-game Island Division road trip, posting a 1-1-0-1 record.
Despite playing their third game in two and a half days, the Vees showed a lot of jump early and had two great chances to grab the lead. First, Jack Ramsey had a short-handed breakaway but he just put the shot wide after fighting-off the trailing defenseman and battling a bouncing puck. The other chance came late as Demico Hannoun ripped a one-timer from the left-circle that was just fought-off by Capitals netminder Matt Zentner.
Hannoun was denied in the first but he wasn’t going to be denied in the second. Early in the middle frame and on the power-play, Hannoun danced around one defender in the right-circle before firing a backhand inside the far-post at 1:19; his 14th putting him in a tie for first in the team goal-scoring lead.
The lead didn’t last long as the Capitals responded a minute and a half later. The Capitals Sean Harrison stuffed his own rebound attempt at the side of the net at 2:45.
Four and half minutes later Horsman put the Capitals ahead for the first time on Sunday. Horsman capitalized on a turnover in the Vees zone and beat Hunter Miska on the blocker-side from the right-circle at 6:13.
Then it was the Vees turn to quickly respond as Mitch Newsome fired a rocket from the slot for his third goal of the season at 7:24; his first goal in 18 games. After no goals in the first period, the two teams combine for four goals in just six minutes in the second.
Cowichan Valley went ahead again early in the third and in the most unconventional manner. After the puck was dumped in from centre it took a weird bounce off the end boards and back out front of the Vees net, and away from Miska who left his goal to play the shoot-in. Kyle Horsman was first to it in front and tapped it in at 3:47.
Skylar Pacheco added an insurance marker midway through the third after a frantic sequence in front of the Vees net. Miska made two desperation goal-line saves before Pacheco found the puck and tucked it upstairs at 8:57.
The Vees tried to muster a late push but the fuel tank ran empty in the dying minutes. Sunday was their fourth game in the last five days and twelfth game in the last twenty-four days.

The loss drops the Vees record to 17-3-0-1 and their road record slips to 9-2-0-1. Patrick Newell extended his point streak to seven games with his two assists Sunday afternoon. The Vees penalty-kill was a bright spot all weekend, as they didn’t surrender a single power-play goal on 12 opposition opportunities in their three games.
The Vees get a much needed break as they’re off until next Friday, November 14th, when they make the trip to Vernon to face the Vipers at Kal-Tire place; face-off is 7pm.
