A new wildfire that was discovered yesterday in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park is being held by firefighters.

The fire was discovered Aug. 19 in the park and reached 4.6 ha in size. The B.C. Wildfire Service doesn’t expect it to grow outside of its existing boundaries, said fire information officer Shaylee Sterns.

It is not currently threatening any structures.

There are 34 personnel on site today and the fire was actioned by eight air tankers and helicopters yesterday. Crews are working to establish wet line around the blaze.

Another wildfire, burning eight kilometres east of Armstrong, is actually three ha in size. The wildfire service previously said it was 10 ha.

The Township of Spallumcheen has activated its Emergency Operation Centre this morning, Aug. 20, in response to the fire.

“The Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department is further assessing the situation with B.C. Wildfire and Township staff,” according to a press release issued by the town. More information can be found on the town’s website.

The fire is also not currently threatening any structures, Sterns said.

There are 25 firefighters on site working with eight pieces of equipment to establish fire guards. Three helicopters are also assisting ground crews this morning.

The fire is burning in heavy timber but Sterns said she wasn’t sure how dry the timber is.

“We really have to be cautious of daytime heating and how that will affect the fire,” Sterns said. “As the weather changes, we’ll staff our resources accordingly.”

The cause of both fires are under investigation.
