Earlier this week, the Mark Anthony Group filed an application for a 12-storey hotel in downtown Kelowna.

Yesterday, March 27, another application was filed by CTQ Consultants to subdivide the parking lot at the Ramada Hotel on Highway 97 to create a new Marriott Towne Place.

No details are listed in the application on the City of Kelowna’s Current Developments web page other than to say “the ‘hotel’ will be designed with compact suites tailored to accommodate the demand for short term rentals in Kelowna.”

The Marriott website says Towne Place suites offer longer term stays in rooms ranging in size from studio to two-bedrooms with kitchens and other amenities.

There are no details on how many rooms are planned for Kelowna.

Last summer, Vernon-based Durali Properties bought the Ramada for $32 million.

Four years ago, the city approved plans by the Mark Anthony Group, which is a major wine producer, to redevelop the former Daily Courier and Keg Restaurant site at 1570 and 1580 Water Street downtown into a wine institute.

They tore down most of the building, originally built in 1908 and expanded in 1928, leaving the historic front facing Water Street braced to hold it up. The site has sat silent and fenced off for the last couple of years.

The latest application is for a 12-storey, 72-room “luxury boutique hotel and vibrant restaurant,” the application says.

It will also feature a rooftop lounge and will incorporate the existing facade.

Parking is proposed to be offsite and the application says they need to work out those details with the city.

There is no mention in the application of a wine institute being part of the project.
