KAMLOOPS - A coroners report that outlines the death of a prominent Kamloops community member has shown Christopher Seguin died of a mix of alcohol and fentanyl.
Seguin died in Victoria Sept. 22, 2017, 11 days after he was found in medical distress in his hotel room.
The B.C. Coroners Service states in its report that emergency crews responded to the 39-year-old's hotel room on Sept. 11, and performed resuscitation measures which included administering naloxone.
Seguin was then taken to local hospital where testing confirmed fentanyl in his system. The coroner's report states Seguin's condition deteriorated over the next few days until he died on Sept. 22, 2017.
Examination of the room turned up bottles of alcohol, but no illicit drugs or paraphernalia were found. Seguin's medical history included a past of overusing alcohol, but nothing about the use of illicit substances.
Toxicology results showed moderate to heavy level of alcohol intoxication, along with a therapeutic range of fentanyl. The report states that combination can lead to respiratory depression, which ultimately led to Seguin's cause of death being an anoxic brain injury, which occurs when the brain is deprived of oxygen.
The death has been classified as accidental.
Seguin, the vice president of advancement at Thompson Rivers University, was a prominent member of the community. He was an active member of TRU and made contributions to not only his community, but others surrounding the city.
Seguin was a graduate of South Kamloops Secondary School before leaving to study linguistics at Simon Fraser University. He returned to Kamloops and was appointed vice president of advancement at TRU in 2007.
