An investment at Thompson Rivers University is contributing to a new trading lab for business students.

Investment firm Raymond James has partnered with the software company FactSet to contribute $550,000 to pay for five new "state-of-the-art" trading stations over five years, according to a TRU press release issued Thursday, Nov. 4.

The dual-monitor stations are equipped with financial research and analysis software and a first of their kind for the university.

“The new trading floor will elevate the experiential learning by providing professional training and research experience for our students,” School of Business and Economics dean Mike Henry said in the release. “Having access to specialized tools used in the finance industry and mentoring from a finance professional are incredibly valuable ways to better prepare them for their careers.”

The idea started with business students Adam Burke and Jacob Lawerence, who created a student investment fund at the university in 2019. They manage the portfolio while learning a hands-on approach to the financial industry.

“The new trading floor will provide TRU students the advantageous opportunity to practice with professional resources," Burke said in the release.

Along with the new lab, a new Raymond James Indigenous Finance Award has been created to encourage Indigenous students to consider a career in finance and business, TRU said.
