TORONTO - The Art Gallery of Ontario is hosting British artist Hurvin Anderson's first solo exhibition in Canada.

Born in Birmingham, England, in 1965 to Jamaican parents, Anderson is known for paintings of lush Caribbean landscapes and urban barbershops — work that deals with shifting notions of cultural identity.

Featuring paintings, sculpture, drawings and photography, "Hurvin Anderson: Backdrop" is the most comprehensive survey of Anderson's work to date, the AGO says. It runs from May 19 to Aug. 21, taking up the entire fourth floor of the gallery's Contemporary Tower.

The exhibition is organized by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Mo., where it appeared last fall.

An earlier solo exhibition, "Art Now: Hurvin Anderson," appeared at London's Tate Modern in 2009.
