Man arrested as Transit Police urge all passengers to report assaults

VANCOUVER - A 37-year-old White Rock, B.C., man has been charged with sexual assault in connection with an incident on a Metro Vancouver bus.

Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan says the arrest was made Jan. 8 after a man was spotted allegedly rubbing up against a 21-year-old woman in what is described as a sexual manner.

Drennan says transit officers have had nearly 50 dealings with Sebastian Ramon Lopez, while police jurisdictions around Metro Vancouver report nearly 100 more contacts with him.

Drennan says it is vital that passengers report all incidents so officers can ensure the safety, security and comfort of everyone using public transportation.

Details of the arrest follow release of a video on Sunday showing a man wanted for the alleged sexual assault of a Japanese exchange student, who was so traumatized that she has only just reported the attack at a Surrey SkyTrain station, although it occurred last fall.

Hundreds of students the University of B.C. are expected to gather for a public forum Monday night to consider transit safety for students already fearful in the wake of several unsolved sexual assaults on the Vancouver campus.
