Tracking app helps Kamloops RCMP nab truck thief

A 24-year-old man was arrested after stealing a truck with a tracking app.

Kamloops RCMP have arresed a 24-year-old male after finding him behind the wheel of a stolen truck.

The thief was likely unaware of the tracking device within the Chevrolet pick-up truck when he stole it from the North Shore neighbourhood on Oct 18.

According to a media release from the RMCP, the owner of the truck used an app called “My Chevrolet” to determine the vehicle’s location and reported it to the police. Police kept an eye on the area for 15 minutes and then watched the suspect approach and get into the vehicle. He was arrested without incident, and was remanded into custody as he had an outstanding warrant for reasons not noted in the RCMP media release.

“Technology definitely helped the officers locate the stolen vehicle,” said Cpl Jodi Shelkie of the Kamloops RCMP.  “The owner was of great assistance by giving the police the GPS coordinates and then letting the officers apprehend the suspect. The vehicle was recovered intact with no damage.”
