Tournament Capital Centre upgrades may include new hardwood court

KAMLOOPS – The city's hoop dreams may rest on a $330,000 proposal for new hardwood flooring at the Tournament Capital Centre.

City staff propose swapping the current floor with hardwood flooring suitable for sanctioned basketball events at the Tuesday, May 16 City Council meeting.

The current flooring can be used for volleyball, but the upgrade would allow the TCC to host bigger basketball tournaments requiring three hardwood courts, rather than the two available now.

Hardwood floors have a longer life expectancy than rubber flooring, and come with less long term maintenance and costs, according to a report prepared by City staff.

In order to go ahead with the project, an additional $330,000 is requested from the Community Works Fund.

The flooring would be part of the $1.5-million in TCC upgrades that include a new indoor track. One million is available through the Gaming Reserve Fund and $500,000 is funded through a Canada 150 Grant, according to the report.
