KELOWNA - Some of the best female sailors in the country will be in Kelowna this weekend for a competitive sailboat race that hasn’t been held in Kelowna since 2007.

The 2015 Re/Max Canada Women’s Keelboat Championships is a fast-paced weekend of racing that takes place over three days in front of Waterfront Park in Kelowna.

The women will all race in 25’ Santana 525 boats, an international offshore standard, ideally suited to conditions on Okanagan Lake. The Kelowna Yacht Club, who is helping organize the race, has the largest fleet of Santana 525’s in the world, according to a media release.

Competitors from Kelowna, West Kelowna, Summerland, Vernon, Penticton and Victoria will make up some of the 19 teams that will compete, but there will also be teams from Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia.

The coach of the 1992 ladies Rolex team, Bobby Brooks of North U, will run a pre-regatta training camp and provide post-race video recaps.

The event will take place Oct. 1 to 4.
