Three Okanagan students made national headlines recently after being selected to receive a $100,000 Schulich Leader scholarship.

Ethan Lodermeier of Summerland and James Ropotar of Kelowna were among this year’s winners of a scholarship valued at $100,000 to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while Aidan Eglin of Armstrong won an $80,000 scholarship.

Students awarded the Schulich Leader scholarship are selected by one of 20 partner universities to receive the large financial award.

The awards were established in 2011 following a $100 million gift from Canadian businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich.

To be eligible for the scholarship, which has a sister program in Israel, nominees must be entrepreneurial-minded and meet two of three criteria: outstanding community, business or entrepreneurial leadership, academic excellence and/or financial need.

The three students were listed as part of a two-page feature on the scholarship winners in the Globe and Mail newspaper.
