James Ropotar won’t have to worry about tuition or how to pay the rent when he goes to university this fall.

The Grade 12 student at Okanagan Mission Secondary School won the $100,000 Schulich Scholarship towards an Engineering/Applied Science degree at the University of B.C. this spring.

It also makes him a part of a network of national Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) scholars.

“Winning the award has definitely changed my life,” Ropotar said in a news release from School District 23. “The Schulich award allows me to focus on my studies and give back to my community. The network connects me with many brilliant minds across Canada, and I’m excited to learn from them.”

He graduates from high school this month.
