Americans need to get out more, or more accurately, Republicans need to get out more. By that, I mean they need to face reality, embrace truths rather than obvious lies. Republicans, both those elected and those who vote for them, seem to be incredibly - and there’s no polite way to say this - stupid.

They believe if they say it…it’s true. They blur fact into their fiction and fiction into their fact. They advance no policies for better healthcare or education or infrastructure. They give tax breaks to corporations and wealthier Americans who don’t need help. They don’t believe in climate change…and mock science. They prefer immigration from Norway…but no one there wants to come to America. They delight in punishing those who are different.

For example, the majority of Republicans in the U.S. Congress still hold so-called whistleblower Gal Luft in the highest esteem. This after Luft - an Israeli-American dual citizen who claims to have compromising information about President Joseph Biden and his son - was charged with serious crimes last November. Of course, there is no compromising information.

What is true is that this newest Republican heart-throb “witness” is charged with being an unregistered foreign agent for China, arms trafficking, breaking international sanctions and making false statements to federal officials. For those keeping score…that’s about 100 years in federal prison if convicted. He is - by the way - a fugitive…so add another 20 years even if not guilty of the other stuff.

Republicans are so desperate to hang something on Hunter Biden and President Biden that they are more than willing to stoop all the way down to stupidity to try and prove a conspiracy theory that is just that…theory. The MAGA (Make America Great Again) caucus lacks shame, common sense and…oh, yes…facts…but even that doesn’t stop them.

Just when it appears these MAGA folks (A.K.A. Freedom Caucus)…Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz, Ted Cruz, Marjorie Taylor “No-Longer” Greene, Paul Gosar, Louie Gohmert, Mo Brooks, Scott Perry and Lauren Boebert can’t squeeze another clown into the car…they try.

Just a couple of weeks ago, they hung amendments on the defense budget bill limiting abortion access, transgender care and diversity training for all military personnel. If Republicans don’t reflect the will of the people - the majority - and their plan B is always…get even.

The Republican Party is one long “Saturday Night Live” skit…except not a single member is likable. They focus their hate on every Democrat…every Liberal…as well as gas stoves, gay marriage, any woman who might become pregnant, transgender folks and, yes, even “Barbie”…you know the movie about someone who exists only as a doll.

Even so, can Democrats - reasonable people - make the point to voters that these folks are well nigh close to crazy? Democrats are spending time bringing back manufacturing, creating job and lowering the cost of gas and food, and pushing inflation down…Republicans are busy drumming up conspiracy theories and regressive, unpopular policies…and, of course, still trying to lock up Hillary.

I believe Democrats should no longer bring a knife to a gunfight. These MAGA clowns are batshit crazy…and anyone with a brain, heart and soul should make it clear to everyone they know that it might get way too crazy if these folks controlled the House, Senate and White House.

It is telling that most Republicans support Donald Trump as a candidate for president in 2024. He is twice impeached, awaits more indictments than Al Capone, can’t tell the truth and as he told me way back in 1981, “getting even” was his highest aspiration.

Republicans don’t try to hide the facts that they no longer believe in democracy, they want an autocratic government that dictates their perverse views on everyone. They want to ban books. They want one religion. They want to deny the rights and privileges they enjoy to those who aren’t heterosexual…or who refer to themselves by something other than “him “ or “her”.

What they want most is to return to the good ole days when being white - no matter how disadvantaged - was in their minds still better than any person of colour.

Do Americans really want these clowns barrelling along in a car with no one steering and no brakes?

We’ll see.
