A wildfire burning near Okanagan Falls has reached 7,918 ha, according to the latest from the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Yesterday, the fire was listed at 7,279 ha. It is still classified as out of control and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

“If conditions on site are favourable today, small-scale planned ignitions will occur along the southeast flank. Crews will be focusing on patrolling hot spots along the west flank of the fire and preparing for a potential planned ignition that will bring the fire to the established guards along the north flank,” according to the service’s latest update this morning.

Crews will also be using small hand ignition tools to bring the fire to guards along the 201 Forest Service Road.

Heavy equipment will be working off the 201 Road along the east flank of the fire to extend the machine line where possible.

There are 17 firefighters, 21 support staff, 33 military personnel and a BCWS Incident Management Team being supported by four helicopters and 19 pieces of heavy equipment on site today.

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen's evacuation alert remains in effect for 724 properties, as well as an order for eight properties in Electoral Area "D." For more information, visit the regional district's website.
