A young dog is recovering after a vehicle dragged him for 200 metres in Merritt and the BC SPCA is recommending criminal charges for animal cruelty.

Sunny the collie mix was rescued by BC SPCA animal protection officers after someone dragged him behind a truck on Sept. 26.

“This is such a sad story. The dog had been tethered to a vehicle,” senior officer for the BC SPCA Eileen Drever said in a BC SPCA media release. “Someone got into the vehicle and drove off, dragging him for about 200 metres. He has abrasions to his front and back paw pads and hocks, the joint between the dog’s hind leg and foot, and his nails were shredded. He is also under weight with a body score of two out of nine, which is very thin.”

The SPCA has been told that Sunny was tethered to the hitch of a truck on the highway when someone climbed in and drove off, unaware he was tied to the vehicle.

Officers took the dog to a veterinary clinic in Kamloops where he was treated for his injuries, and he is currently recovering at the BC SPCA’s Kamloops centre.

“Sunny has already gained two kilograms while in our care,” Drever said.

The SPCA is recommending charges to Crown counsel based on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

“Everyone is so impressed at his resiliency,” Drever said. “Sunny loves spending time outside in the sunshine, playing in the field with staff and volunteers. He is a huge fan of cuddles in his kennel and loves nothing more than hanging out with people.”

Since the investigation is ongoing and Sunny's recovery is in progress the BC SPCA is not sure when Sunny will be available for adoption.
