PENTICTON - An Oliver church escaped serious damage following a fire ignited by bird scare devices that had been tampered with.
The incident occurred on Friday, May 31 around 11:15 p.m. when police responded to a report of several loud bangs, smoke and fire at the Oliver United Church.
Const. James Grandy said in a press release issued this afternoon, June 3, Oliver RCMP and members of the Oliver Fire Department attended and discovered several ‘bird bangers’ at the scene which were believed to be the cause of the bangs.
Nearby bushes had caught fire as a result of suspects tampering with the bird bangers, but firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.
Grandy says the potential for fire damage is high in the area, Several complaints have been lodged over a number of high school aged youth and transients acting suspiciously in the area recently.
Grandy says the matter continues to be investigated.
