A West Kelowna man was arrested while fleeing the scene of a robbery at a jewelry store Saturday night.

Officers responded to alarms at a jewelry store on Main Street around 8:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, where they found evidence of a break-in, according to an RCMP press release.

After searching the area, they found a 33-year-old West Kelowna man fleeing the scene, and he was found to be carrying an undisclosed amount of store merchandise.

“This stolen property was likely going to be sold on the black market,” Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tammy Lobb said in the release. “Our officers responded quickly and acted decisively to catch this thief in the act and return the stolen merchandise to the store.”

The suspect was charged with breaking and entering, theft over $5,000 and possession of stolen property.

He was released from custody, but is expected to appear in Kelowna provincial court on Nov. 30.
