Summerland cops tipped off about online hardware store scam

Summerland RCMP are warning people about a new scam where criminals have set up a fake hardware store website.

Peavey Mart is a Canadian hardware company with locations in Kamloops and Salmon Arm in the Thompson-Okanagan region, and the chain recently announced it is closing up shop and selling off its inventory.

Summerland RCMP were told about a scam involving fake websites and social media accounts posing as Peavey Mart on Feb. 10, according to a press release from police.

The fake sites offer a 90 per cent discount, free shipping and more.

The real Peavey Mart does not offer online shopping and all sales are in-store only.

Scammers might be creative and have the know-how to build a website, but it seems like their poor spelling always tips their hand. The fake website misspells “store closing sale,” has a higher discount than the real Peavey Mart, and a different web address.

“Summerland RCMP reminds the public not to click on any links received from an unknown number, and to be wary of clicking on sites that pop up on social media. For safety, use an Internet browser to navigate to the known business website, or call a nearby location and confirm the correct website and any sales that may be happening. Scams may come by text, email, phone call, or while browsing social media and we remind people to remain vigilant,” police said in the release.
