Summer camps at the KAG focus on teaching creative processes

KAMLOOPS - Join us for a fun-filled, creative summer inspired by the exhibition Jerry Pethick: Shooting the Sun/Splitting the Pie.

Led by our talented art instructors, campers will explore outer space and invent rocket ships; assemble found object sculptures and paint like Seurat; deconstruct art history and discover colour theory. Each day includes an interactive tour and activity in our exhibition spaces, developing the ability of young artists to articulate their ideas about what they’re looking at.

Campers enrolled in Week A "Wild Inventors" will participate in lessons about rocket ship construction, machine design, collage, and exploring how to use mediums in fun new ways! Week A will have a larger focus on 3D and sculpture, with minimal 2d works. Week B "Investigating Art History" will include lessons with a larger focus on 2D, exploring artists that Pethick references in his works and bringing our own ideas and stories to art history. We will be learning about colour theory and early photography and using our creative skills to make new experimental art works.

As with all of our studio programs, KAG art camps put priority on the creative process over the outcome. We encourage young artists to experiment, test new techniques and develop their skills through self-expression.

One morning a week, campers will go on a field trip to the Kamloops Library (with whom we share a building) to participate in their Summer Reading Club and read stories that explore themes relevant to the exhibition.

At the end of the summer, we celebrate the accomplishments of the talented young artists who participated in our summer art camp with an exhibition on our BMO Open Gallery. We hope you will join us at the reception on Saturday, August 27 at 11:00 am.

Extended care is available 8:30 to 9:00 am and 3:00 to 3:30 pm. Register online at the Kamloops Art Gallery website, or by calling (250) 377-2400.
