KAMLOOPS - The Kamloops school district has released recommendations from the superintendent's task force on how to better address sexual misconduct between students.

Kamloops-Thompson School District superintendent Alison Sidow presented a 12-page report on student safety at a school board meeting yesterday, June 18.

The task force was formed in March after two parents complained to the school board about the way sexual misconduct incidents involving their children were handled, according to a school district media release

“I was deeply disturbed when these issues arose,” Sidow says in the release. “The district’s intention is always to provide a safe, productive, learning space for all our students and staff and it was clear that some did not believe this was the case.”

Some of the recommendations include promoting and creating reporting tools to ensure students who may be impacted have ways to seek out the supports they require and defining what constitutes sexual misconduct in schools.

The task force members were asked to examine the district’s policies, protocols and practices to ensure they address the needs and perspectives of the students impacted by incidents involving sexual misconduct, the district says.

Sidow says she is extremely satisfied with the work the group has completed. The recommendations will improve staff training and educational programs for students.

The task force includes representatives from the Kamloops RCMP, Ministry of Children and Family Development, the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre, parents, school and district administration, the Aboriginal Education Council and the Board of Education.
