Strong southwest winds are expected this afternoon in the South Thompson-Nicola region, according to a statement from Environment Canada.

"An intense Pacific cold front approaching the coast this morning will move rapidly across the Interior this afternoon. Southeast winds will rise abruptly to southwest 40 km/h with gusts to 70 or even 80 in the wake of the front. A few power outages are possible," according to the statement.

Winds will diminish tonight as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the west, according to the statement.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, email to BCstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #BCStorm.
