Streaming services influencing demand for popular Okanagan Halloween costumes

Calowna Costume owner Kerri Brandel poses with a Cruella de Vil.

Netflix and Disney+ are heavily influencing this year’s top picks for Halloween costumes, according to a Kelowna costume store.

“Cruella de Vil has been hot, everybody wants to be Cruella de Vil. It was an amazing movie this year so people are following that, Squid Game has been another huge one,” said Calowna Costume owner Kerri Brandel.

“(It's hard) to find right now since it came out so late so there wasn’t a lot of merchandise to be had so people are creating and making their own which is awesome."

Squid Game costumes are the most sought-after theme in 2021 across Canada, according to a Google Trends analysis by Fathermag.com.

Scary costumes are also popular.

It’s neat to see the return of scary traditional costumes, from witches to goblins to zombies, Brandel said.

“It’s kind of neat to see and I don’t know if it relates to it being a scary year, things like that. People are like ‘I’m just going to be scary.’ I don’t know what’s going on but it’s awesome,” she said.

Employee Victoria Phillips said Disney+ and Netflix is another leading factor in children’s costumes, with the resurgence of the Addams Family and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Superheros are always a fan favourite, Brandel said.

Last year, they didn’t see much demand around Halloween but over the years there’s been an increase in requests for rented costumes, she said.

“Kelowna and around town has always been a huge supporter of Calona Costume and it melts our hearts and does us good… people are being a little bit more conscious and it’s changing times,” she said.
