Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,781.04 down 82.46points):

Avion Gold Corp. (TSX:AVR). Miner. Up 12 cents, or 21.43 per cent, at 68 cents on 13,982,606 shares. The Toronto-based company's stock closed at its highest since May, a day after Endeavour Mining Corp. (TSX:EDV) announced it will acquire Avion in an all-stock deal worth $389 million. The company also released its drilling results Tuesday on its Hounde Property in Burkina Faso, describing the results as having "good potential."

Starfield Resources Inc. (TSX:SRU). Miner. Down half a cent, or 33.33 per cent, at a penny a share on 11,275,841 shares. The metals and mining sector was down 0.36 per cent on the main index.

Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K). Miner. Down seven cents, or 0.89 per cent, at $7.77 on 4,978,849 shares. Gold led all the decliners on the TSX, dropping 1.04 per cent.

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Transportation equipment. Up three cents, or 0.80 per cent, at $3.76 on 4,882,710 shares.

Endeavour Mining Corp. (TSX:EDV). Miner. Down 41 cents, or 17.08 per cent, at $1.99 on 4,836,092 shares. The company said the deal to purchase Avion Gold will help it boost its 2012 gold output by about 50 per cent.

Research In Motion Ltd. (TSX:RIM). Wireless technology. Up 24 cents, or 3.28 per cent, at $7.56 on 4,713,605 shares. The troubled technology company's stock closed at its highest level since early July, boosted by a report by investment firm Jefferies which suggested that Research In Motion Ltd. is trying to revive discussions about a possible partnership with Samsung Electronics Co.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,185.68 down 4.88 points):

Arcan Resources Ltd. (TSXV:ARN). Oil and gas exploration. Down 24 cents, or 17.02 per cent, at $1.17 on 5,654,258 shares.

Legend Power Systems Inc. (TSXV:LPS). Energy. Up half a cent, or 6.67 per cent, at eight cents on (TSX:AW.UN) 4,399,778 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airliner. Down nine cents, or 7.83 per cent, at $1.06 on 713,414 shares. The country's largest airline said its second-quarter loss more than doubled to $96 million or 35 cents per share from year-earlier loss of $46 million or 17 cents per share. Revenue increased by $71 million to $2.99 billion.

BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE). Telecommunications. Up $1.05, or 2.43 per cent, at $44.30 on 2,835,185 shares. Canada's largest telecommunications company raised its dividend to 56.75 cents per share from 54.25 cents, beginning with the October payment to shareholders. It also raised its 2012 earnings forecast after reporting a second-quarter profit of $773 million or $1 per share, up from $590 million or 76 cents per share a year ago. Operating revenue was $4.92 billion, down from $4.95 billion a year ago.

Rona (TSX:RON). Home improvement retailer. Down two cents, or 0.15 per cent, at $13.73 on 991,382 shares. Canada's largest chain of home-improvement stores earned $34.1 million in the second quarter, down from $37 million in 2011. Revenue was in line with estimates, rising by 3.4 per cent from a year ago to $1.4 billion while same store sales increased by one per cent.
