Average weekly payroll earnings rose in April: StatsCan

OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says average weekly earnings of non-farm payroll employees roe to $896.63 in April, up one per cent from March.

And the federal agency says earnings increased by 3.1 per cent on a year-over-year basis.

Earnings growth in the wholesale trade, construction and retail industries outpaced the year-over-year national average, while earnings declined in health-care and social assistance.

Average weekly earnings in wholesale rose 8.5 per cent to $1,096.42, while construction earnings were up 6.9 per cent to $1,141.62 and retail trade earnings rose 4.4 per cent to $531.

Weekly earnings of payroll employees in health-care and social assistance fell 1.2 per cent to $815.93.

Average weekly earnings increased in every province in the 12 months to April, with the highest growth in Newfoundland and Labrador.
