A spring heat wave expect to begin Friday in the southern Interior has prompted a warning from Environment Canada.
The weather office has issued a special weather statement as the mercury is forecast to rise into the low- to mid-30s beginning on Friday, May 12.
The advisory covers the South and North Thompson, Nicola, Shuswap, Okanagan, Similkameen and Boundary regions.
The highest temperatures are expected to last through the weekend until Tuesday when temperatures should begin to moderate, forecaster say.
“Daytime highs will be 10 to 15 degrees above seasonal values while overnight lows will be 5 to 10 degrees above what is normally experienced this time of year,” the special weather statement reads.
“Freezing levels will rise throughout this event leading to increased snowpack melting with possible local flooding due to high stream flow levels.”
The weather office say with the high temperatures there’s a risk of heat-related illnesses.
“While the developing heat conditions may well result in daily temperature records being broken, it must be emphasized that the expected hot conditions will not approach those reached during the Heat Dome of late June 2021,” the statement says.
