GUADALAJARA — Canadian tennis player Marina Stakusic batted .500 in Mexico on Friday, knocking off the tournament's third seed during the day and then losing a late night quarterfinal match at the Guadalajara Open.

The 20-year-old Stakusic, of Mississauga, Ont., upset the third-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-2, then dropped a 6-2, 6-3 singles quarterfinal match in 74 minutes to Emiliana Arango of Colombia to bow out of the WTA 500 event.

Against Ostapenko, Stakusic won 87 per cent of service points and scored the only break of a sold first set.

She led the second-set tiebreaker 5-2 before Ostapenko rallied to take the extra session 7-6 (6).

But Stakusic regained her momentum in the third set, scoring two breaks to clinch the victory.

Against Arango, a tired Stakusic had 31 unforced errors and two double faults. She had no aces and had a 36 first serve percentage.

The 20-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., advanced to her first quarterfinal at a WTA Tour-level event since last year's Guadalajara Open.
