Speed boat drives onto shore in bizarre late night accident in West Kelowna

August 24, 2017 - 12:03 PM

WEST KELOWNA – Three people had to be rescued from Okanagan Lake late last night when their speed boat crashed into the shore.

West Kelowna RCMP were sent to an area just north of Lake Okanagan Resort on Westside Road around 10 p.m. yesterday, Aug. 23. Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says police arrived to find a 24 foot Malibu wakeboard boat on the shore amongst the trees.

Three uninjured adult men were found in the water nearby, one was the registered owner of the boat, he says.

“Another of those males, a 32-year-old West Kelowna man who had been found floating, displayed gross levels of intoxication,” O’Donaghey says in a media release. “Due to his level of intoxication and perceived inability to care for himself, he was taken into police custody to be released when sober.”

Police are investigating the crash and still trying to determine how the accident happened and how many people were on board at the time.

Unconfirmed reports, O’Donaghey says, are that a fourth person may have been aboard.

The three men who were rescued were uninjured.
