PENTICTON - A slow start to the ski season followed by a spectacular finish, weather-wise, has led one Okanagan ski resort to extend its season.

In a video posted to Apex Mountain Resort’s Facebook page, general manager James Shalman says it was a tough season for the Penticton-area ski hill, with a late December start, a good January and February's “deep freeze” giving way to beautiful conditions in March. Apex is located about 45 minutes west of Penticton.

With a solid 164-centimetre base, Shalman says customers don’t want the ski season to end, so they have extended it with a couple of bonus days.

The resort is open seven days a week until March 31. It will close from April 1 to April 5, and reopen for the weekend of April 6 and 7. That brings the official closure for the season in line with the estimated final ski day at Vernon’s Silver Star Mountain Resort, which is also slated for an April 7 closure.

Big White Ski Resort, east of Kelowna, expects to operate until at least April 22, while Sun Peaks Resort northeast of Kamloops estimates April 14 will be its last day. Baldy Mountain Resort near Oliver will operate until March 31.
