Florence and Mitch Wilkinson were hoping to win the massive $70 million lottery prize on Jan. 3, but they still feel like winners after all seven of their numbers matched with the Maxmillions draw. Their numbers matched those of a winner in Ontario, which gave them half a million dollars.

“We bought a few more tickets than normal because we knew the jackpot was $70 million,” says Mitch in a media release. “Even with $500,000 we were still shaking holding the big cheque!”

The Wilkinsons scored one of the 30 Maxmillion prizes that were drawn on Jan. 3, and bought the winning ticket from Black’s Pharmacy in Merritt.

The couple have called Merritt home for most of their lives and will spend some of the money on home renovations, while the rest goes into savings.

Mitch has been plowing snow for over 30 years along the Coquihalla Highway, but he doesn’t plan to quit just yet. According to a release from the BC Lottery Corporation, the half a million is making retirement look a little more enticing.

“It’s been a real challenge on the Coquihalla over the years, keeping the roads clear and drivers safe,” Mitch says. “Even though it’s tough, I still enjoy doing what I do.”
