TORONTO - Maybe Toronto FC got a deal in England striker Jermain Defoe, whose MLS salary has been reported at 90,000 pounds (C$165,255) a week.

British reports say Manchester United is negotiating a new deal with striker Wayne Rooney worth 300,000 pounds ($550,565) a week.

According to the reports, Rooney has told his representatives to initiate talks with United over a new long-term deal to replace the final 18 months of his current contract worth 250,000 pounds ($459,100) a week.

The Manchester Evening News says the 28-year-old Rooney would make 312,00 pounds (C$573,175) a game under the new deal.

Defoe, 31, is set to stick with England's Tottenham until the end of next month when he joins Toronto.
