Real Madrid's Gareth Bale ruled out of Copa del Rey opener with flu

December 07, 2013 - 8:43 AM

MADRID - Real Madrid says forward Gareth Bale has the flu and will miss the team's Copa del Rey opener at third-division Olimpic Xativa on Saturday.

Madrid will be without the Wales international and the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, likely leaving its attack to Karim Benzema or youngsters Jese Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata.

Bale scored his first hat trick for Madrid last weekend since his world record 100-million euro transfer from Tottenham this summer.

Madrid will play the second leg of its round-of-32 tie in two weeks at its Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
