KELOWNA - A snowmobile operator became disoriented and lost after walking away from his machine when it broke down Sunday night.

The man was riding alone in the area south of the Big White village when the machine broke down. He attempted to walk out but ended up spending several hours walking in the wrong direction when he became disoriented, Central Okanagan Search and Rescue Vice President Duane Tresnich says in a release.

The man was able to call RCMP when he realized he was lost and the search and rescue organization, along with the Big White Fire Department, was called in to help. While volunteers were preparing to head out, fire personnel used 4x4 trucks to search the logging roads in the area. Two members of the public using personal snowmobiles also helped search the area, and were the ones to locate the man.

The lost man was brought back to the resort in good condition.

Tresnich reminds people to ride with others in the backcountry and to stay with your equipment and call for help if your machine breaks down.
