Mix of veterans, new blood as Canada names para-alpine team for Sochi

January 21, 2014 - 2:18 PM

CALGARY - Canada will have a mix of experience and youth on the slopes at the Sochi Paralympic Games.

The 13-member Canadian para-alpine team heading to Russia was named Tuesday. It includes veterans Josh Dueck of Kimberley, B.C., Toronto's Chris Williamson, Kimberly Joines of Rossland, B.C., Matt Hallat of Coquitlam, B.C., and Kirk Schornstein of Spruce Grove, Alta.

Williamson — who is guided by Robin Femy of Mont-Tremblant, Que. — won a gold medal at the 2002 Paralympic Games and is a three-time medallist. Dueck won a silver at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, while Joines claimed a bronze in 2006.

Also nominated was Braydon Luscombe of Duncan, B.C., who was a forerunner in Vancouver.

Canadian Paralympic rookies in Sochi will include Caleb Brousseau of Terrace, B.C., and Mac Marcoux of Sault Ste-Marie, Ont., — who is guided by his older brother Billy Joe Marcoux — along with the Calgary trio of Alexandra Starker, Kurt Oatway and Alana Ramsay.

The Paralympic Games run from Mar. 7-16.
