IDRE FJÄLL - Reece Howden sped to a gold medal on Saturday in the second last men's World Cup ski cross race of the season, while fellow Canadian Courtney Hoffos took silver in the women's race.

Howden, from Cultus Lake, B.C., leads Italy's Simone Deromedis by 33 points atop the overall standings heading into Sunday's final race as he seeks the second Crystal Globe of his career.

Deromedis was second in Saturday's race while Sweden's Erik Mobaerg was third.

The win was Howden's sixth of the season. He also has a silver and a bronze medal this campaign.

Hoffos, of Windermere, B.C., finished behind winner Daniela Maier of Germany to pick up her fourth medal of the season (two silver, two bronze). She also won silver at the world championships earlier this month in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Switzerland's Fanny Smith finished third to clinch the Crystal Globe.
