A warming cabin used by nordic skiers is closed for the season after Silver Star Mountain Resort employees found a large party had occurred there in contravention to provincial health orders.

Ian Jenkins, director of sales, marketing and accommodation with the resort, said Mountain View Cabin, a warming hut on the cross-country ski trail system, is not patrolled or lit at night.

On Friday, March 26, resort employees went out to groom the trails and saw the remains of a big party that occurred the night before at the cabin, he said.

“Out of the concern for the well-being of our guests and staff, we decided to close it for the remainder of the season and we’ve actually turned the investigation over to the RCMP and they’re investigating it currently,” Jenkins said.

Employees found the remains of a large fire outside and a fire extinguisher was used inside the cabin that damaged the structure.

“We were obviously worried, it’s a small log cabin in the middle of the woods,” Jenkins said.

Currently, gatherings are limited to 10 people outdoors due to COVID-19, according to current provincial health restrictions

This has been an isolated incident, Jenkins said. “We’ve had a great season, we’ve been able to stay open the whole season, that’s been our focus from the get go. We’ve put a ton of safety protocols in place to keep our guests and staff and the community safe and we’ve been really happy with the way (things have gone.)”

The Vernon North Okanagan RCMP could not be immediately reached for comment.
