KELOWNA - The first day of summer could bring with it some active weather as a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Thompson-Okanagan regions today.
Environment Canada says conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms with capability for producing heavy rain to develop today, June 21, in Kamloops, Merritt, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton.
The strong ridge of high pressure the region has been experiencing the past few days has moved east, resulting in a moist and unstable airmass over B.C.
The South Thompson, North Thompson, Okanagan, Nicola and Shuswap regions could see rainfall rates up to 25 mm in an hour in addition to strong wind gusts and intense lightning associated with these storms.
Heavy rain may result in flash floods and water pooling on highways and roads.
